The Air Jordan 5 continued taking the Air Jordan line into new heights. Tinker Hatfield looked even further
outside the box to feature a World War 2 fighter plane look on the shoe itself, complete with a #23 embroidered
on the side, new icey (clear) soles, lace locks, and a new custom 3M reflective tongue.
Nike continued their Mars Blackmon “It’s gotta be the shoes,” marketing efforts in popular culture. Perhaps in
todays retro world, one of the more unique features of the shoe was the ‘Grape’ colorway. In ‘The Fresh Prince
of Bel-Air,’ Will Smith helped keep the Air Jordan’s ingrained in everyone’s minds by wearing the Grapes, as
well as other Air Jordan 5s on the show and in promotional materials.
The original Air Jordan 5 was ultimately released in four colorways. Jordan himself wore three on the court and
seen wearing the ‘Grapes’ in Nike advertising. However, Jordan wore a still-unreleased player exclusive
featuring a unique 23 embroidered on the site and a grey reflective tongue.
